Hi johnnybravo, Both GPW 14280 and your GPW 15607 could have been either first or second contract GPWs, The DoD and Contract in the April, '42 time period depends on where the GPW was assembled and not on the serial number itself. Can you post a clear photo of the frame serial number stamping? Also be careful of the information found in the link posted by Robert.
It looks like a very good information site and I have not reviewed the entire link yet but the part that I did read was a load of crap. All slat grills were MB's, so if you are GPW, it would be stamped grill. And, yes, I believe Ford script on rear panel.

That is the serial # of your GPW. Where the # on the title came from is another matter. When my GPW was first titled in Pa. Issued it a # and I.D.
Plate, this is what is on the title, not the factory serial # that is on the frame. Things were done different back then, ignorance is bliss.
Different factories were issued hood #. You need to know where and when your GPW was assembled to get the numbers for that time period. And September 42 seems to be a key month when initial changes were inplimented in the design. Some earlier and parts were bing used up and some right around that time frame. So you are free to do almost anything you want with the jeep for a motor pool restoration.
